Golden Eagles Drop A Third Straight Heartbreaker

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had to endure a third straight one-goal defeat in a California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a pair of first-half goals, but battled back admirably in the second half in a 2-1 loss to the Otters in University Stadium. Cal State LA (3-4-1, 0-3 CCAA) was able to snap its scoreless streak, but was unable to avoid a third straight conference loss.

Itzel Ramirez did the scoring honors for the Golden Eagles in the 60th minute as Cal State LA was able to pounce on a Cal State Monterey Bay miscue in the box, with Ramirez knocking the ball into the goal from right in front. Ramirez scored her second goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead.

Cal State LA had a 14-4 edge in shots over Cal State Monterey Bay (3-5-2, 1-2 CCAA), but the Otters capitalized on a pair of set pieces in the first half to take the lead. Kamryn Bubak was able to head in a free kick taken by Jadynn King just outside the side of the box in the 20th minute to give the Otters the lead.

Cal State Monterey Bay then took a 2-0 lead off another free kick, this one a long one sent into the box by Chloe Van Winkle. Bubak got a touch on it over to Danielle Castro, who fired a shot from the center just under the crossbar in the final minute of the first half.

Trailing 1-0, the Golden Eagles had a pair of chances thwarted by Cal State Monterey Bay defenders in the 23rd minute. Ramirez had a shot that seemed destined for the left corner of the net, but an Otter defender was positioned right there just off the goal line and knocked the shot away. Then, Itzel Carbajal got a shot through traffic that was kept out of the net in a scramble in front of the net.

Cal State LA appeared to have some momentum at that point, but Cal State Monterey withstood the pressure and then got the big goal in the final minute of the first half that proved to be the difference.

Cal State LA had a 14-4 edge in shots, including a 7-1 advantage in the second half. Cal State LA also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, including a 4-0 edge in the first half. Ramirez and Lizbet Saligan had three shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Chico State at 11:30 a.m.
