Golden Eagles Break Through For First CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team picked up an elusive first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Sunday with a masterful performance against Chico State.

The Golden Eagles, after three frustrating one-goal losses to open conference action, played their best game of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats in University Stadium. Cal State LA (4-4-3, 1-3 CCAA) won for the first time in six home contests and scored two goals in a home game for the first time this season.

Delia Bocanegra had a tremendous game, scoring the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute and then drawing a foul in the box that resulted in a penalty kick and a goal for teammate Celine Gehring in the 83rd minute that essentially put the game away.

Chico State (4-5-2, 2-2-0 CCAA), which was coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, had 10 shots and four corner kicks in the second half on Sunday, but the Cal State LA defense stood strong and led to goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin's fifth shutout of the season. Sumlin made five saves in one of her best performances of the season.

Bocanegra opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Gehrig started the scoring play with a lofted pass to Bocanegra, who collected the ball at the top of the box and quickly fired over the goalkeeper and in for team-leading third goal of the season.

Cal State LA survived a Chico State push in the second half and took a 2-0 lead with Bocanegra essentially providing an assist for Gehrig. Bocanegra ran onto a ball in the box and eluded the Chico State goalkeeper, but was fouled by a defender before she could shoot into an empty net. Gehrig took the penalty kick and scored the first goal of her Cal State LA career.

Chico State had an 18-10 advantage in shots, but Cal State LA did an outstanding job of keeping most of the attempts from a distance. The Wildcats also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Gehrig and Jacqueline Marin had two shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Gehrig, Itzel Carbajal and Lindsey Metcalfe played all 90 minutes to lead the defensive charge.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
