ALAMEDA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had its chances on Friday against Cal State East Bay, but the Golden Eagles had to endure yet another frustrating one-goal defeat in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The Golden Eagles allowed an early goal and couldn't get the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to the Pioneers at the UCSF Health Oakland Roots and Soul Performance Center. Cal State LA (4-5-3, 1-4 CCAA) suffered its third 1-0 loss in conference play and all four defeats have come by one goal in games where the Golden Eagles had the edge in shots.
Cal State LA had a 17-11 advantage in shots on Friday against Cal State East Bay (5-5-2, 3-1-1), including a hefty 11-4 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles had their best chance at equalizing in the first half, but their leading scorer,
Delia Bocanegra, had her penalty kick saved by Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Ashley Levi. That was the biggest of Levi's seven saves in the match.
The game's only goal came in the 14th minute when Kella Folkerts scored her fourth of the season with an assist from Taylor Hodges.
Kendyl Sumlin made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Bocanegra and
Itzel Carbajal had four shots each for the Golden Eagles, while
Itzel Ramirez and
Reyna Roman had two shots each.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
