LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals and picked up a big win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.
Jacqueline Marin scored the equalizer for the Golden Eagles in the 49th minute and
Itzel Ramirez got the game-winner in the final two minutes of an exciting 2-1 win over the Toros in University Stadium. Cal State LA (5-5-3, 2-4 CCAA) won for the second time in the past three games and pulled to within two points of a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-7-2, 1-4-1 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, but had a player sent off with a red card in the 40th minute and Cal State LA took full advantage in the second half.
The Golden Eagles had a 20-11 advantage in shots, including a 14-5 edge in the second half. Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Audrey Haman made 10 saves for the Toros in an outstanding individual performance.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Rihanna Tryels, in her Golden Eagle debut, was also outstanding and made five saves. The only goal for the Toros was a shot from the box by Betsy Lopez Rayas that grazed her fingertips and went just under the crossbar.
The Golden Eagles really turned up the pressure in the second half and got the game-tying goal in the 49th minute when
Jacqueline Marin fired off a quick shot off a centering pass from
Itzel Carbajal to the near post. Marin now shares the team lead with three goals. The assist was Carbajal's second of the season and fourth of her Cal State LA career.
The Golden Eagles had several opportunities to take the lead after getting the tying goal, but the Toros held them off until less than two minutes remained.
Celine Gehrig chipped a pass toward goal and Ramirez was able to head it over the goalkeeper and into a vacated net for her third goal, which ties her for the team lead in goals as well. The assist was Gehrig's second of the season and second in the past three games.
Delia Bocanegra had a brilliant match as well and had a game-high six shots, including three on goal. Marin had five shots with four on goal, while Ramirez had three shots with two on goal.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against San Francisco State at 4:30 p.m.
