Golden Eagles Overcome Gators For CCAA Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team moved closer to a California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament spot with a second straight win on Friday.

The Golden Eagles scored early to take the lead for good and then added a second-half score as well in a 2-0 win over San Francisco State in University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-5-3, 3-4 CCAA) pulled to within one point of sixth place in the conference pending late results on Friday.

Kristin Mijares opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the 12th minute and Syra Valdez got the insurance goal in the 72nd minute.

Cal State LA had a 23-4 advantage in shots, but San Francisco State goalkeeper Kylie Tone made 10 saves to keep her team within striking distance.

Rihanna Tryels made two saves and posted her first career shutout in her second start for the Golden Eagles.

Mijares got her second goal of the season to give Cal State LA the early lead. Itzel Ramirez made a nifty back-heel pass to Mijares, who rifled a shot to the far post for the goal. The assist was the first of the season for Ramirez.

The Golden Eagles had several close calls, but didn't find a second goal until Valdez broke though in the 73rd minute with her first goal of the season. Samantha Cole set up the goal with a strong run into the box and Valdez didn't miss her opportunity for the goal.

Delia Bocanegra was a steady threat for the Golden Eagles with five shot attempts, including three on goal, in her 54 minutes of playing time. Reyna Roman had four shots, including two on goal, while Itzel Carbajal and Lindsey Metcalfe had two shots each.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal Poly Humboldt at 11:30 a.m.
