Golden Eagles Get A Big CCAA Win On Sunday

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team completed a productive weekend with another impressive win on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles stretched their winning streak to three with a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Stadium. Cal State LA (7-5-3, 4-4 CCAA) pulled into a tie for fourth place with Cal Poly Humboldt (5-5-5, 3-2-3 CCAA) with three conference matches remaining. Both teams have 12 points. The top six teams will advance to the CCAA Tournament.

Reyna Roman broke a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute with a big assist from Delia Bocanegra after the Golden Eagles had weathered a sustained Cal Poly Humboldt push that included a penalty kick that went off the post in the 66th minute. Cal State LA goalkeeper Rihanna Tryels made a couple of outstanding saves during a 10-minute span to keep the game scoreless.

Then Bocanegra and Roman combined for the biggest play of the match. Bocanegra, who was brilliant in 63 minutes of playing time, sent a nifty pass into the box to Roman, who was able to direct a shot to the far post for her first goal of the season. The assist was Bocanegra's team-leading fourth of the season.

The Golden Eagle defense did the rest with Tryels ultimately making six saves for her second straight shutout. She made four of her six saves in the second half, including two after Cal State LA had taken the lead.

Cal Poly Humboldt had a 21-10 advantage in shots, including a 14-6 edge in the second half. The 'Jacks also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 4-1 advantage in the second half.

After a scoreless first half, the pace definitely picked up in the second and the Golden Eagles finally broke through late to pick up a much-needed win.

Jacqueline Marin had four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Bocanegra had three. Frida Duran Arellano and Sari Murphy had four shots each for the 'Jacks.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino at 4:30 p.m.
