Golden Eagles Take The First-Round Lead In Arizona

GOODYEAR, ARIZONA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team had a sensational opening round at the RJGA Women's Shootout at Estrella.

The Golden Eagles shot just the second under-par team round in program history on Monday and hold the lead after the first round. Cal State LA shot a 1-under-par 287 at the Golf Club at Estrella and holds a seven-shot lead over second-place Cal State San Marcos. It's the best team round for the Golden Eagles other than a 286 they shot in the final round of the National Preview at the Boulder City Golf Club in 2024.

Joshlyn Ayala shot a 2-under-par 70 and is in a tie for second place, just one shot behind leader Theresa Shaw of Vanguard. Ayala brilliantly recovered from a double-bogey on the second hole of the day and had six birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the par-4 sixth hole and par-3 seventh hole to get below par. She had three birdies and two bogeys on the back-nine, including a birdie on the 18th hole to get to within one shot of the lead.

Daniela Andrade, who won this tournament as a freshman in 2023 in her first collegiate competition, shot a 1-under-par 71 and is in fourth place, just two shots off the lead. She had two birdies and three bogeys on the front nine and then, after a bogey on the 10th, finished with three birdies down the stretch to get under par. She birdied two of the final three holes to get into contention.

Newcomer Talia Gutman had another outstanding round for the Golden Eagles and is in fifth place after an even-par 72. She birdied the first and ninth holes to even out a pair of front-nine bogeys and then birdied the 18th hole to get to even par. She is just three shots off the pace.

Cal State LA has three golfers in the top-five and four golfers in the top-11. Another newcomer, sophomore Rilee Crosby, had a strong showing in her Golden Eagle debut and is tied for 11th after an opening-round 74. She had four birdies on the day.

Sarah Amaya is in a tie for 47th round after an opening round of 80. Her round was highlighted by a birdie on the 10th hole. Lisette Orellana, competing as an individual, shot an opening round of 82.

Ayala leads the tournament after one round with six birdies, while Andrade is second with five. As a team, Cal State LA recorded 19 birdies, which is three more than Lubbock Christian.
