No. 2 Golden Eagles Post Fourth Straight Shutout

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team put on another stout defensive showing and the Golden Eagles needed it in a tight 1-0 win over Western Washington on Saturday in University Stadium.

Jeancarlo Alvarez scored the first goal of his Cal State LA career in the second half to lift the No. 2 Golden Eagles (3-0-1) to their third victory in four games. Alvarez raced to get to a misplayed ball in the box and kicked it into an empty net for the game's only goal.

Cal State LA didn't allow many chances in two games this week against Western Washington and Seattle Pacific of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, but they also didn't generate many. The Golden Eagles were held to a 0-0 draw by the Falcons on Thursday.

Cal State LA's Brayden McClelland recorded his fourth straight shutout to begin his Golden Eagle career, making five saves. His best of the day came in the 22nd minute when he came out to challenge a shot by Albin Jonsson in the 22nd minute and was able to deflect it out of play.

The Golden Eagles broke through in the 62nd minute when they took advantage of a rare Western Washington miscue for the go-ahead goal. Angel Sevillano sent a long pass downfield toward Alvarez and Viking goalkeeper came out of his crease as Alvarez and a Western Washington battled. The ball went through his hands and Alvarez got to it first and knocked it into the net.

Cal State LA did an outstanding job managing the game from there, although Western Washington did have a solid chance in the 79th minute when the Vikings drew a foul and got a free kick just outside the box. The ensuing shot by Joar Tidblom came dangerously close, but went just wide.

Cal State LA was outshot, 12-9, and had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Alex Mendez had two of Cal State LA's nine shots.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with its first road game of the year at Colorado School of Mines.
