HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team was seeking a doubleheader sweep on Saturday after another big offensive showing in the opener, but the Golden Eagles were on the wrong side of a pitching gem in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles pounded out 16 hits to back outstanding pitching from
Lino Zepeda in an 11-1 win in the opener, but they managed only five hits in the nightcap and fell by a 6-0 decision in the nightcap.
It marked the second straight week Cal State LA was blanked in the seven-inning nightcap after a lopsided win in the opener.
Cal State LA (19-14, 16-7 CCAA) has won 11 of its last 13 games.
Isaiah Marquez went 4-for-6 with a home run, four runs scored and two RBI in the opener, while
Ben Lee went 3-for-4 with a home run and
Cesar Chavez went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
Zepeda went seven strong innings in his longest stint of the season to earn his second win. He gave up five hits and one run while walking two and striking out seven.
Atticus Gonzalez got the first two outs of the seventh inning with Cal State LA holding a 5-1 lead before
Joel Martinez came on to leave the bases loaded with a key strikeout to end the inning. Cal State LA broke the game open with six runs in the ninth and Martinez finished up for his second save of the season.
Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Ethan Gonzalez grounded into a double play to drive in Marquez and Marquez made it 3-0 with a two-run home run in the third.
Alberto Prado singled in a run to make it 4-0 in the fifth and Lee hit a solo home run for a 5-0 lead in the seventh.
Cal State East Bay (15-18, 11-12 CCAA) got its only run in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring double by Dominick Najar.
The Pioneers then threatened by loading the bases with three walks after two were out in the eighth, but Martinez came on to strike out the only batter he faced in the frame to shut things down.
Cal State LA then added six runs in the ninth. Lee dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away as two runs scored to make it 7-1. Gonzalez doubled in another run, Chavez doubled in two more and Gilberto Morales singled in another to make it 11-1.Â
Martinez gave up a leadoff single in the ninth, but then got a double play ball and a pop-up to end it.
Cal State LA was then blanked in the seven-inning nightcap for a second straight week.
Brandon Gutierrez pitched well, allowing only six hits and two earned runs over five innings, but got no run support for the second straight start.
Max Gonzalez allowed only five hits - all singles - and didn't walk a batter to get the win and improve to 5-2 on the season. He was backed by a two-run home run by Luke Brown that extended the Pioneers' lead from 4-0 to 6-0 in the sixth.
Javy Espinoza had two of the six five hits for the Golden Eagles, while Prado, Chavez and
Kadyn Victorian each had singles.
Cal State LA will conclude the series at Cal State East Bay with a single game on Sunday at noon.
