LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team endured a lopsided first half in a home loss Saturday to Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles were blitzed by an early 18-0 run that wiped out an early one-point lead and the Seawolves went on to an 83-58 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-12, 6-8 CCAA) trailed at halftime, 52-26, and was unable to make up much ground in the second half.
The Seawolves shot an incredible 71 percent in the first half, including an 11-of-13 performance from 3-point range.
The Golden Eagles tumbled out of a tie for fifth in the conference and into a four-way tie for sixth with the loss, while Sonoma State (9-10, 5-8 CCAA) pulled to within one-half game of that pack.
Corey Cofield II had a career-high 29 points for the Golden Eagles and notched his fourth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. He was the only Cal State LA player to reach double figures.
Chris Holley and James Nobles had 17 points each to lead five Seawolves in double figures.
Jaden Lazo had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Dominic Escobar and
Devin Ringer had five points each.
Shane Bell had a team-high seven assists.
Cal State LA shot just 36.8 percent for the game (21-of-57) and was just 7-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Sonoma State shot 55.2 percent for the game and was an amazing 71.4 percent for the first half (20-of-28) that included an 84.6 percent showing from 3-point range. Sonoma State finished the game 15-of-28 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were just 4-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Sonoma State had a 35-30 rebounding edge and committed only eight turnovers to 10 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA led only once, at 5-4, after a 3-pointer by Escobar. The game turned in a hurry as Sonoma State hit four straight 3-pointers and five overall during an 18-0 run that made it 22-5. The Seawolves led by as many as 29 points before a 3-pointer by Lazo made it 52-26 at halftime.
Sonoma State opened the second half with a 10-2 run to put an end of any comeback hopes by the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
