LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team came up on the short end of a mighty struggle Thursday night against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles gave up a go-ahead basket with 1:23 to go and came up empty down the stretch and fell to the Broncos, 48-46, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-13, 6-9 CCAA) tumbled out of a sixth-place tie and is now one game out of a tournament spot with seven games remaining. Cal Poly Pomona (12-9, 7-8 CCAA) kept a share of sixth place with San Francisco State.
Dominic Escobar had a game-high 14 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Corey Cofield II had 10 points and six rebounds.
Demarreya Lewis-Cooper had 11 points and four rebounds for the Broncos, while Jaden Winfield had nine points and six rebounds.
Devin Ringer had nine points and three steals, while
Raphael Gay had seven points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Cal State LA shot just 32.7 percent (16-of-49) and was 7-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 39.6 percent (19-of-48) and was 3-of-18 from the free-throw line. The Broncos were 7-of-12 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona had a 38-25 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed 12 turnovers to 17 for the Broncos.
Cal State LA started quickly and led 11-1 less than six minutes into the game. The Broncos, though, responded with a 17-3 run to open up an 18-14 advantage. The Broncos led by as many as six points, 26-20, but the Golden Eagles got a jumper by Escobar and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Ringer to make it 26-25 at halftime.
The second half was a grind with neither team able to take control of the game. A 3-pointer by
Jaden Lazo gave the Golden Eagles, their biggest lead of the half, 35-30. A layup by Winfield gave the Broncos their biggest lead of the half, 46-43, but Cofield II hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 1:44 to go.
Those were Cal State LA's last points of the night, though, as the Broncos took the lead on a jumper by Miles Lewis with 1:23 to go and then forced two stops to preserve the lead.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
