Golden Eagles Drop CCAA Opener To Broncos

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a rough beginning to its California Collegiate Athletic Association campaign on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles, who had a lengthy break after opening their season with a 3-0 record, shot just 23 percent and fell to host Cal Poly Pomona, 68-49, in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (3-1, 0-1 CCAA) trailed by 17 points at halftime and was unable to make much of a dent in the Broncos' early advantage.

Sofia Fidelus had 14 points and Nevaeh Asiasi had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, but they took a lot of shots to get there. Mariah Blake had eight points and four rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona (5-1, 1-0 CCAA) got a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds from Sydney Nelson, while Andrea Stajic had 13 points and seven rebounds. Brielle Minor and Kadence Lloyd had 10 points each.

Kyara Walter had six points and hit both of her 3-point tries for the Golden Eagles, while Mary Cotton had three points and six rebounds.

Cal State LA shot just 23.2 percent for the game (16-of-69) and was just 4-of-18 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) and was 4-of-11 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona had a 50-39 rebounding edge and committed 11 turnovers to nine for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA took its only lead of the game when Fidelus hit a 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles ahead,  5-4. Cal Poly Pomona, though, scored the next 10 points and led the rest of the way. A three-point play by Asiasi brought the Golden Eagles to within four points, 16-12, but the Broncos extended their lead to 21-14 after one quarter.

The Golden Eagles got 3-pointers by Cotton and Walter and a basket by Asiasi to pull to within one point, 23-22, early in the second period, but the Broncos scored the final 16 points of the quarter to take a 39-22 halftime lead.

Cal State LA's offensive struggles continued in the second half and Cal Poly Pomona was able to maintain healthy leads the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
