SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team bounced back nicely from a disappointing California Collegiate Athletic Association opener on Thursday with a much better performance on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game and never trailed in a 68-60 win over Cal State San Bernardino in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (4-1, 1-1 CCAA) got career-best performances from
Nevaeh Asiasi and
Mariah Blake and led by double-digit margins for most of the second half.
Asiasi led the way with a career-high 25 points, including 17 in the first half when she helped the Golden Eagles to a 33-21 halftime lead. She also matched a career-high with 12 rebounds while recording her second double-double of the season. Blake, meanwhile, set career highs with 13 points and 15 rebounds while recording the first double-double of her career.
Sofia Fidelus was the third Golden Eagle to record a double-double and she was one assist away from a triple-double after finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
Rebecca Saidoff had a team-high 20 points for Cal State San Bernardino (2-5, 0-2 CCAA).
Amaya Fuentes had eight points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Kyara Walter had eight points and two assists.
Cal State LA shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 25 percent (19-of-76) and was 9-of-31 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 13-of-20 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 55-47 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to nine for Cal State San Bernardibno.
Asiasi scored the first five points of the game on a layup and a 3-pointer and Cal State LA led the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles led by as many as nine points in the opening period before settling for a 13-7 lead after one quarter.
Cal State LA saw the lead cut to a single point at 16-15 early in the second period before a layup by Blake, a 3-pointer by Fidelus and another layup by Blake boosted the lead back to 23-15. A late 3-pointer by Asiasi gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead and a 33-21 advantage at halftime.
The Golden Eagles opened the third quarter with baskets by Fidelus and
Ronyae Jackson to extend the lead to 37-21 and they extended the lead to 18 points, 40-22, after a 3-pointer by Asiasi. Cal State LA settled for a 55-43 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Walter opened up the fourth period with a 3-pointer and hit two free throws and Blake hit a basket to give the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 62-43, with 7:40 to go. Cal State LA kept a double-digit margin all the way until the final seconds.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at Pepperdine before hosting its 2025-26 home opener against Central Washington on Monday, Dec. 15, at noon.
