POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team continued its frustrating string of close defeats on Thursday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles pulled to within one point after a 3-pointer by
Khemanni Davis with 1:23 to go, but didn't score again in a hard-fought 58-57 loss to the host Broncos in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (1-6, 0-1 CCAA) has lost its last three games by four points each.
Isaiah Fields scored a game-high 23 points for the Golden Eagles, while Davis also hit double figures with 11 points.
Deraje Agbaosi had eight points and seeven rebounds.
Cal Poly Pomona (6-1, 1-0 CCAA) got 18 points - on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range - from Sam Hunter, while Malcom Bell had 12 points, including a key layup with time winding down to give the Broncos their late four-point lead.
Jordan Hansen had nine points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 36.5 percent overall (19-of-52) and was 12-of-39 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 41.7 percent (20-of-48 and was 11-of-29 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 10-of-16 from the free-throw line. The Broncos had a 38-28 rebounding edge and committed 12 turnovers to 10 for the Golden Eagles. In a statistical oddity, Cal State LA was whistled for 17 fouls to just five for Cal Poly Pomona, including an 8-1 count in the first half.
Cal State LA started quickly and opened up a quick 8-2 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers by Fields and Hansen. A steal and layup by Fields gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 24-16, with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Broncos, though, finished the half well and tied it at 30-30 after a late free throw.
The Broncos opened the second half with another run and took their biggest lead, 41-32, with 16 minutes remaining and equaled that nine-point edge, 49-40, with 11:42 left.
The Golden Eagles, though, battled back and got to within two points at 52-50 after five straight points from Fields and got to within a single point, 58-57, after the 3-pointer by Davis with 1:23 to go. After the Broncos missed a free throw, the Golden Eagles had a chance for the lead, but a turnover led to a free throw and an offensive rebound after a missed free throw on the second attempt led to a layup by Bell with 12 seconds to go that sealed it.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at Cal State San Bernardino.
