Golden Eagles Are At Home In Big Win Over Pioneers

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team doubled its fun on Sunday in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles had seven players score in double figures and recorded a 93-63 win over the Pioneers in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-3, 3-1 CCAA) shot 52.2 percent and had 25 assists on its 35 baskets. The Golden Eagles built a 37-25 halftime lead, extended it to 61-46 after three quarters and broke the game open in the final period.

Sofia Fidelus led the balanced attack for the Golden Eagles with 14 points, while Amaya Fuentes had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Nevaeh Asiasi posted her second double-double in as many games with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Aloha Akaka and Lailah Carey had 15 points each for the Pioneers (4-7, 3-1 CCAA), who suffered their first conference loss.

Mariah Blake had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Kyara Walter had 12 points, courtesy of four 3-pointers, and Ronyae Jackson finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 52.2 percent for the game (35-of-67) and was 10-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-21 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 33.3 percent (27-of-81) and was 6-of-20 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 52-39 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 18 for Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick 6-2 lead thanks for 3-pointers from Fidelus and Walter, but the Pioneers used a strong run to take their only lead of the game at 10-8 after a 3-pointer by Taylor Eldredge. Cal State LA, though, got a jumper in the paint from Blake, a free throw by Fidelus and a 3-pointer by Blake and never trailed again.

Back-to-back baskets by Blake and Fidelus to close the first quarter gave the Golden Eagles an 18-13 lead.

Cal State LA led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, the final time after a jumper in the lane by Asiasi, and settled for a 37-25 halftime lead.

The Pioneers got the opening basket of the third quarter to pull to within nine points at 37-28, but Fuentes countered with a 3-pointer and the Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins for the rest of the game.

Jaden Newman scored a career-high five points on 2-for-2 shooting down the stretch for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will now enjoy the holidays and return to competition on Jan. 2 at Chico State.
