LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had things going for a half, but Cal State East Bay remained unbeaten with a big second-half turnaround.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 37-23 halftime lead, but the Pioneers shot 56 percent in the second half and pulled away down the stretch for a 77-69 win in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-7, 2-2 CCAA) had a two-game winning streak snapped, while Cal State East Bay (10-0, 4-0 CCAA) remained the lone unbeaten team in the conference.
Deraje Agbaosi had an outstanding game and finished with 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Khemanni Davis and
Donovan Vickers scored 12 points each.Â
Jaayden Bush had 20 points to lead three Pioneers in double figures, while Amare Campbell had 14 points and Terence Haywood had 12 points.
Michael Pearson Jr. had nine points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaiah Fields had six points and eight rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 45.8 percent for the game (25-of-55) and was an efficient 8-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 42.2 percent for the game (27-of-64), but was 18-of-32 in the second half, including 7-of-12 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line, including 11-of-16 in the second half.
Cal State East Bay had a 42-35 rebounding edge and committed only 11 turnovers to 14 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA trailed, 19-15, with six minutes left in the first half, but closed out the period with a 22-4 run to open up a 37-23 halftime lead. A layup by Fields and a 3-pointer by Davis gave the Golden Eagles a 20-19 lead and started a 12-0 run that included four straight points by Agbaosi and a 3-pointer by Davis. After Haywood back-to-back layups to make it 27-23, the Golden Eagles closed the half with a jumper by Vickers, 3-pointers by
Sam Ibeh and Davis and a steal and layup by Vickers to take a 37-23 lead at the break.
Cal State East Bay, though, scored the first 10 points of the second half to change the momentum. The Golden Eagles fought off the surging Pioneers and still held an eight-point lead, 61-53, with 6:25 to go, but they were finally overtaken by an 11-0 run that put Cal State East Bay ahead for good.
Vickers stopped the run with a 3-pointer to make it 65-64 with four minutes remaining, but the Pioneers responded with a 7-1 run to take a 72-65 lead with 1:35 to go.
A layup by Agbaosi made it 72-67 with one minute left and a pair of free throws by Pearson Jr. made it 74-69 with 47 seconds left, but the Pioneers hit three free throws in the waning seconds to account for the final margin.
Cal State LA will now enjoy the holiday break and return to action on Jan. 2 in a conference game at Chico State.
