Golden Eagles Surge To A Win Against Gators

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball  team got back on track Friday thanks to a big third-quarter outburst against San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles broke open a tight game at halftime with a 26-8 advantage in the third quarter of an 80-57 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over the Gators in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-3, 2-1 CCAA) held a slim 32-29 lead at halftime before their third-quarter edge. The Golden Eagles shot 61 percent in the period and limited the Gators to just three baskets.

Nevaeh Asiasi had another big game for the Golden Eagles, scoring a game-high 23 points to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds. She also had five assists. Amaya Fuentes had a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

Athena Brombacher had a team-high 17 points for San Francisco State (2-7, 0-3 CCAA), while Samantha Myhr had 13 points.

Kyara Walter had 12 points and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Mariah Blake had nine points and eight rebounds. Sofia Fidelus had six points and seven assists.

Cal State LA shot 47.8 percent overall (32-of-67) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-15 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 31.3 percent (21-of-67) and was 6-of-32 from 3-point range. The Gators were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 50-36 rebounding edge and each team committed 16 turnovers.

Cal State LA scored the first five points of the game on a 3-pointer by Fuentes and a basket by Ronyae Jackson and led the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles took their first double-digit lead after a basket by Walter made it 14-4, but they couldn't shake the Gators, who pulled to within 16-8 after one quarter and 32-29 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles opened the third quarter with baskets by Fuentes and Fidelus and then broke the game open with a 14-2 run to close the period. A 3-pointer by Walter gave the Golden Eagles a 49-35 lead and Cal State LA scored the final nine points of the period on a pair of free throws by Asiasi, a 3-pointer by Fuentes, an offensive rebound basket by Blake and a fastbreak layup by Fuentes to take a 58-37 lead entering the final period.

Cal State LA led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by Jaden Newman made it 80-48.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State East Bay at 1 p.m.
