Golden Eagles Fall In Home Opener To Wildcats

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team finally had its 2025-26 home opener on Monday, but it was visiting Central Washington that made itself right at home.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a lead after one quarter, but the Wildcats took control in the second period and went on to a 74-59 victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-3) dropped its second straight game after a 4-1 start, while No. 17 Central Washington (8-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season last Saturday.

Nevaeh Asiasi had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles, while Sofia Fidelus had 15 points, three rebounds and five assists. 

Asher Cai had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Capri Sims had 17 points and Fiona Snashell had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Amaya Fuentes had 11 rebounds and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ariyah Smith and Mariah Blake had six points each.

Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (20-of-55), but after making 8-of-14 attempts in the opening quarter, the Golden Eagles were just 14-of-41 (34 percent) for the rest of the game. The Golden Eagles were just 2-of-13 from 3-point range and made 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. 

Central Washington shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) overall and 10-of-32 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Central Washington had a 44-27 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 15 for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles started well and scored the final four points of the first quarter on baskets by Blake and Fidelus to take a 19-14 lead.

 A layup by Asiasi gave the Golden Eagles a 21-16 lead early in the second quarter, but the Wildcats scored the next eight points as part of a 16-2 run that gave them a 31-23 lead. Central Washington held a 35-27 lead at halftime.

A pair of free throws by Kyara Walter cut the margin to 49-42 midway through the third quarter, but the Wildcats opened up a 12-point lead at 58-46 by the end of the period and maintained its advantage the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will resume California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday against San Francisco State at 5:30 p.m.
