Golden Eagles Clinch 14th Straight CCAA Tourney Bid

POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got a late game-winning goal for the second time this weekend and clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament for a 14th straight season.

The Golden Eagles got a penalty-kick goal in the 87th minute from Alex Mendez in a big 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday in Kellogg Stadium. Cal State LA (8-3-5, 5-3-1 CCAA) moved into a tie for third with Cal State East Bay with the victory. Both teams have 16 points, one point ahead of fifth-place Cal State San Marcos.

The Golden Eagles, who got an 85th-minute goal from Johnny Gonzalez in a 3-2 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, will face the Cougars in San Marcos on Thursday in the conference regular-season finale. The first round of the conference tournament begins at campus sites on Sunday with the top two seeds earning byes and seeds No. 3 and No. 4 hosting first-round matchups.

The top six teams will qualify for the conference tournament.

Cal State LA, which had allowed seven goals in its last three games and 10 over its last four, was much tighter defensively on Sunday and blanked Cal Poly Pomona (7-5-5, 2-4-3 CCAA) to record its seventh shutout of the season.

Brayden McClelland made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.

Cal Poly Pomona had a 14-8 advantage in shots and enjoyed a 7-4 edge in each half. The Broncos also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The lone goal came after a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles with just 3:25 to play. Mendez successfully converted for his third goal of the season. 

Mendez had a team-high three shots on Sunday, while Angel Sandres, who had the assist on the game-winning goal by Gonzalez on Friday, had two shots.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday in the regular-season finale at Cal State San Marcos.
