Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Secure CCAA Tourney Home Game

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team waited until the final minute to secure a first-round home game on Sunday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

The No. 24 Golden Eagles got a penalty kick goal from Alex Mendez in the 90th minute to give Cal State LA a 2-2 draw with Cal State San Marcos on Thursday in The Cage. Cal State LA (8-3-6, 5-3-2 CCAA) earned one point with the tie and moved into sole possession of third place in the final conference standings with 17 points. Cal State San Marcos (6-7-4, 5-4-1 CCAA) finished in a tie for fourth with 16 points and earned the No. 5 seed.

Cal State LA will host No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay in a first-round tournament game in University Stadium on Sunday at noon. The winner of that game advances to face No. 2 seed Stanislaus State on Friday in the conference semifinals at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Mendez was the late hero once again for the Golden Eagles as he converted on a late penalty kick for a second straight game. He had the lone goal in a 1-0 win at Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday with a penalty kick in the 87th minute and he came through again with 47 seconds left to earn the 2-2 tie at Cal State San Marcos.

Cal State LA hit the post twice during a scoreless first half, but the third time was the charm in the second half with the Golden Eagles facing a 1-0 deficit in the 69th minute. Emil Kischka's free kick went off the left post, but Jose Lopez was the first to the rebound and he shot into an empty net for the equalizer. The goal was the first of his Cal State LA career.

The Cougars, who had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Efren Nunez Dominguez in the 55th minute, regained a one-goal advantage when Oli Barrosa scored just 27 seconds after the Lopez goal.

The game stayed at 2-1 before a foul in the box with 47 seconds left resulted in Mendez' penalty kick and fourth goal of the season.

Cal State San Marcos had a 16-10 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cal State LA goalkeeper Brayden McClelland made five saves for the Golden Eagles.

Angel Sandres and Anthony Lopez had shots go off the post in the first half. Mendez and Ignacio Moreno had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA now turns its attention to its first-round matchup against Cal State East Bay on Sunday. The Pioneers edged the Golden Eagles, 3-2, last month in Hayward.
