LOS ANGELES -- After seeing a 2-0 lead disappear for a second straight game, Cal State LA's men's soccer got some late heroics to pick up a big win over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 halftime lead and then got a game-winning goal on a beautiful strike by
Johnny Gonzalez in the 85th minute of a 3-2 victory over the Coyotes in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Stadium. Cal State LA (7-3-5, 4-3-1 CCAA) pulled into a third-place with Cal State East Bay with 13 points and remained one point ahead of Cal State San Bernardino (8-3-5, 3-2-3 CCAA), which is tied for fifth 12 points, with two conference games remaining.
The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Things started well for the Golden Eagles on Friday. They played an impressive first half as they looked to snap a rare two-game winless streak in University Stadium.
Hunter Devlin opened the scoring in the 35th minute with his first goal of the season. The play was started by
Joel Green, who stole the ball in the Cal State San Bernardino end and sent a ball into the box.
Alex Mendez was able to get a touch and the ball went to Devlin, who fired a shot to the far post for the 1-0 lead.
Anthony Lopez made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute with his first goal of the season.
Geovanni Antuna sent the ball into the box, where it was headed by Devlin to Lopez, who fired a shot to the near post.
The Coyotes, though, made it 2-1 early in the second half thanks to a strong move by Anthony Morales, who eluded Cal State LA defenders and sent a cross into the box, where Luis Marin finished from point-blank range to cut the Cal State LA lead in half.
Morales then tied it in the 71st minute on a brilliant strike on a free kick from just outside the box.
The game remained tied until the 85th minute when
Angel Sandres sent a cross into the box where Gonzalez delivered a one-touch laser that nestled just inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
Cal State LA was outshot, 15-12, and both teams had four corner kicks.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Ricardo Cabrera made five saves - all in the second half.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona.
