Golden Eagles Come Up Short In CCAA Showdown

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team came up short Sunday in a battle between unbeaten and nationally-ranked teams at Stanislaus State.

The No. 21 Golden Eagles struck first with an early goal, but the No. 2 Warriors scored the next two goals and recorded a 2-1 victory in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Game of the Week in Warrior Stadium. Cal State LA (4-1-4, 1-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in nine games this season, while Stanislaus State (7-0-1, 1-0-1 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to eight games.

Alex Mendez gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, but the Warriors countered with goals in the 15th and 72nd minutes to secure the win.

After falling behind, Cal State LA had three shot attempts, but was unable to find the equalizer.

Both teams had nine shots in the game, with Cal State LA owning a 6-3 edge in the second half. Each team had two corner kicks in the evenly-contested game. Cal State LA goalkeeper Brayden McClelland made two saves for the Golden Eagles.

Felix Alverdale and Jose Lopez had two shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Mendez, Angel Sevillano, Leon Steffen, Geovanni Antuna and Evan Yoell had one shot each. The Mendez goal was the only shot on frame for the Golden Eagles.

Mendez scored his second goal of the weekend and second of the season just 4:45 into the game to give Cal State LA the lead. Felix Alverdale had the assist, his second of the season.

Stanislaus State, though, got the tying goal in the 15th minute when Gerardo Flores notched his fifth goal of the season. Landon Leal Ruix had the assist. The Warriors got the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute on the second goal of the season from Alexis Cervantes, with Ian Reis collecting the assist.

After falling behind, the Golden Eagles got shots from Antuna, Steffen and Alverdale, but none were on net.

Cal State LA will return action on Friday with its first conference home game against Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:30 p.m.
