Golden Eagles Fall Late At Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team came up just short Thursday night in a tightly-contested California Collegiate Athletic Association battle at Sonoma State.

A 3-pointer by Jaden Lazo made it a one-possession game in the final minute, but Sonoma State was able to rebound a miss and convert on a back-breaking 3-pointer to finish off a 76-70 victory in the Wolves Den. Cal State LA (5-8, 3-4 CCAA) and Sonoma State (7-5, 3-3 CCAA) were unable to build leads larger than eight points in a game that featured 17 lead changes and 10 ties before it was settled.

Corey Cofield II led five Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points and five rebounds, while Shane Bell had 14 points, five rebounds and six assists. 

Chris Holley and Aaron Ragen had 15 points each to lead Sonoma State.

Kyjuan Cannady had 14 points and four assists for the Golden Eagles, Lazo had 14 points and was 4-of-7 from 3-point range and Dominic Escobar had 11 points and three steals.

Cal State LA shot 45.8 percent for the game (27-of-59), including 50 percent (14-of-28) in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-22 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State shot a sizzling 56 percent for the game (28-of-50), including 60 percent (15-of-25) in the second half. The Seawolves were 12-of-21 from 3-point range, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range, and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Sonoma State had a 34-22 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed only eight turnovers to 14 for the Seawolves.

Cal State LA started well and opened up a 16-10 lead in the first five minutes. Sonoma State responded with an 8-0 run to erase the deficit. The Golden Eagles fell behind by six points, 36-30, before a 3-pointer by Lazo made it 36-33 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Lazo gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the second half, 47-41, with 15 minutes to go, but the Seawolves scored the next nine points to take the lead. A 3-pointer by Escobar tied it at 50-50 and a three-point play by Cofield II gave the Golden Eagles a 53-50 lead with 12 minutes to play. 

A 3-pointer by Cannady gave the Golden Eagles a 63-60 lead with eight minutes left, but Sonoma State held the Golden Eagles scoreless for four minutes during an 11-0 run that made it 71-63.

Cofield II hit a pair of free throws and Cannady hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 71-67 with two minutes left and Lazo's 3-pointer made it 73-70 with 1:22 remaining. After the two teams traded turnovers with 58 seconds to go, the Golden Eagles forced a missed jumper with 39 seconds left, only to see an offensive rebound lead to a back-breaking 3-pointer with 18 seconds left.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at Cal State San Marcos at 3 p.m.
