Golden Eagles Enjoy A Career Day At San Marcos

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team got a career game from senior Jaden Lazo and picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory at Cal State San Marcos.

Lazo knocked down a career-high eight 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 28 points to lead the Golden Eagles past the Cougars, 87-67, Saturday in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (6-8, 4-4 CCAA) earned a road split for the second straight week and pulled itself into a multi-team tie for fourth place pending a late result on Saturday.

Lazo's eight 3-pointers were one behind the program record of nine, set by Alexander Sokol on Feb. 26 at Sonoma State.

His previous high was four, set on Thursday at Sonoma State. For the week, Lazo was 12-of-17 from 3-point range.

Lazo's 28 points easily surpassed his previous high of 18 points achieved against Biola earlier this season. He scored his 28 points in 22 minutes of playing time in an extraordinary efficient performance.

He led four Golden Eagles in double figures on Saturday. Connor Scales had 13 points, Shane Bell had 12 points and Raphael Gay had 11 points and four rebounds.

Keavie Love had 22 points and Micah Boone had 19 points for Cal State San Marcos (1-12, 1-6 CCAA).

Dominic Escobar had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while Corey Cofield II had seven points.

Cal State LA shot 54 percent for the game (34-of-63) and was 13-of-23 from 3-point range and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles shot an incredible 66.7 percent in the second half (18-of-27), including 8-of-10 from 3-point range. Lazo was a big part of that, going 6-of-7, in the second half, all from 3-point range.

Cal State San Marcos shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) and was 7-of-24 from 3-point range and 14-of-25 from the free-throw line.

Cal State San Marcos had a 38-23 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed only 11 turnovers and forced 24.

Cal State LA jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never trailed. The Golden Eagles saw their lead cut to just two points, 27-25, but scored the last 13 points of the period to take a 40-25 halftime lead. Bell scored five straight points to start the run, which included a three-point play by Scales, a 3-pointer by Scales and a jumper by Bell.

Lazo hit a 3-pointer to open the second half and four quick points from Gay opened up a 47-25 advantage. Lazo hit four 3-pointers in quick succession to give the Golden Eagles a 64-40 lead with 11 minutes to go.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against San Francisco State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
