LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team saw a spirited comeback attempt come up just short Thursday in a disappointing California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half, but a late surge pulled them within three points before a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds rattled in and out in a 70-65 loss to the Gators in University Gym.
Cal State LA (6-9, 4-5) and San Francisco State (6-9, 4-5 CCAA) are two of five teams tied for fifth in the CCAA.
Corey Cofield II had 25 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Devin Ringer had a season-high 14 points and three rebounds.Â
Pearse Uniacke had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Gators, while John Bakke had 14 points and three rebounds.
Shane Bell had eight points and three steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Dominic Escobar had six points, two rebounds and three assists and
Raphael Gay had five points and three rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 42.3 percent for the game (22-of-52) and was just 6-of-23 from 3-point range, including just 2-of-13 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-20 from the free-throw line, including 10-of-12 in the second half. San Francisco State shot 54.2 percent for the game (26-of-48) after going 13-of-24 in each half. The Gators were 6-of-19 from 3-point range and 12-of-21 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as eight points, 29-21, in the first half, but got a late 3-pointer by Ringer to tie it at halftime, 33-33.
The Golden Eagles, though, struggled through most of the second half and fell behind, 54-39, with 12 minutes to play and still trailed by 12 points, 61-49, with 7:21 to go. A 3-pointer by
Kyjuan Cannady and a layup by Cofield II sliced the deficit to seven points, 61-54, and a 3-pointer by Bell brought the Golden Eagles within five points, 62-57. After the Gators stretched the lead back to nine points, Cofield II hit three of four free throws and a jumper by Escobar made it 66-62. Bell hit a free throw to make it 66-63 and a basket by Cofield II cut the margin to three at 68-65 with 1:08 to go. The Golden Eagles were unable to take advantage of turnover and a missed front end of a one-and-one and were blanked down the stretch.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State East Bay at 3 p.m.
