LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had some anxious moments at the end, but picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win Saturday over Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles saw a 12-point lead with four minutes to play whittled to two points in the final minute before righting the ship and posting an 87-81 win over the Pioneers. Cal State LA (7-9, 5-5 CCAA) pulled into a tie for fourth place in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona, one game ahead of a pack of teams that includes Cal State East Bay (6-10, 4-6 CCAA).
Dominic Escobar scored a season-high 22 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. He also had six assists and three steals.
Jaden Lazo had 20 points, four rebounds and five assists and
Raphael Gay had 20 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Lazo was 6-of-9 from 3-point range in the game.
Tyree Campbell had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers, while DJ Sanders had 20 points.
Corey Cofield II had 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Devin Ringer added five points and three assists.
Cal State LA shot 62.2 percent for the game (28-of-45) and was 7-of-13 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 24-of-28 from the free-throw line, including 10-of-11 by Escobar. Cal State East Bay shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and was 7-of-17 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 20-of-26 from the free-throw line.
Cal State East Bay had a 31-20 rebounding edge and committed 21 turnovers to 23 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA jumped out to an 18-8 lead on a basket by Cofield II and built its biggest lead of the first half at 27-15 following 3-pointers by Lazo and Ringer. The Pioneers battled back to tie it at 37-37, but the Golden Eagles went on an 11-3 run to close the half and took a 48-40 halftime lead. Escobar broke the tie with a jumper, assisted on a basket by Gay and then hit a pair of free throws following a steal to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Cal State LA opened the second half with baskets from Cofield II and Escobar and two free throws by Escobar to extend their lead to 54-40 and led by at least five points until the final minute. When Escobar made a layup with five minutes left, the Golden Eagles held a 77-65 lead.
The Golden Eagles saw their lead cut to 81-79 with 33 seconds left, but Ringer and Cofield II hit a pair of free throws each to boost the lead back to 85-79 and Cal State LA closed out the win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal Poly Humboldt.
