ARCATA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team got off to an outstanding start Thursday night at Cal Poly Humboldt, but ultimately fell in a tight California Collegiate Athletic Association game.
The Golden Eagles held a 16-point lead midway through the first half, but the Lumberjacks sliced the deficit to two points by halftime and went on to an 84-78 victory in Lumberjack Arena. The Golden Eagles were outscored in the second half, 50-42.
Cal State LA (7-10, 5-6 CCAA) finds itself in a five-way tie for fourth place in the conference as the CCAA schedule hits the halfway point. Cal Poly Humboldt (9-7, 5-6 CCAA) climbed into the multi-team fourth-place logjam.
Corey Cofield II had a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Raphael Gay had a season-high 21 points and seven rebounds and
Dominic Escobar had 17 points and two rebounds.
Aidan Fowler had 22 points for the Lumberjacks, while Rob Diaz had 20 points. Five Cal Poly Humboldt had five players score in double figures.
Shane Bell had nine points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA had an efficient game offensively and shot 53.4 percent (31-of-58) for the game, including 57.1 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles were just 4-of-13 from 3-point range and they were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 53.7 percent (29-of-54) and was 5-of-13 from 3-point range. The Lumberjacks were 21-of-24 from the free-throw line.
Cal Poly Humboldt had a slim 28-27 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 15 for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles got off to an electric start, racing out to a 28-12 lead following a dunk by Gay off an assist by
Devin Ringer nine minutes into the game. The Golden Eagles still had a nine-point lead at 36-27 after a jumper by Escobar, but the Lumberjacks scored the final seven points of the half to pull to within 36-34 at halftime.
Cal State LA held a 51-44 lead with 13:47 to go after two baskets by Gay and a basket by Cofield II fueled a 6-0 run and a basket by
Kyjuan Cannady kept the margin at 55-50 with 12 minutes to go.
A layup by Bell gave the Golden Eagles their last lead, 61-60, with nine minutes to go and a steal by
Jaden Lazo led to a layup by Cofield II tied it at 63-63 with 7:46 remaining. The Lumberjacks, though, scored the next four points to take the lead for good. A three-point play by Escobar pulled the Golden Eagles to within 69-68 with four minutes to go, but the Lumberjacks scored the next six points and led the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State at 3 p.m.
