CHICO -- Cal State LA's
Shane Bell hit a career milestone on Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Chico State.
Bell scored on a layup with 3:18 left to hit 1,000 points for his outstanding Cal State LA career in a hard-fought 95-86 loss to the Wildcats in Art Acker Gym. Bell's basket brought the Golden Eagles to within five at 85-80 with plenty of time left, but they couldn't get any closer.
Bell, who made an immediate impact to the Cal State LA program as a freshman in 2021-22 when he appeared in 16 games with nine starts.
He had a breakout year in 2022-23 when he earned second-team All-CCAA honors and was second on the team in scoring (13.0 points per game) and second in rebounding (4.3 per game) and led the team in assists with 3.0 per game.
Bell then helped lead the Golden Eagles to the best season in program history with a 24-7 record highlighted by the program's first-ever CCAA Tournament title. He earned first-team All-CCAA honors and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' All-District second team. He led the team in assists for a second straight season and was also second on the team in scoring.
He is having a strong senior season as well and is currently second in scoring at 10.9 points per game and leading the team for a third straight season in assists.
Bell finished with 11 points on Saturday to give him precisely 1,000 in his Cal State LA career.
Dominic Escobar, another four-year star for the Golden Eagles, led five players in double figures on Saturday.
Corey Cofield II had 19 points and seven rebounds, while Bell had 11 points, four rebounds and one assist.
Jojo Murphy had a game-high 31 points and eight assists for Chico State (15-3, 11-1 CCAA), which also had five players reach double figures.
Devin Ringer had 12 points and three rebounds, while
Jaden Lazo had 10 points and two assists.
Cal State LA shot 45.6 percent for the game (31-of-68) and was 10-of-18 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 14-of-17 from the free-throw line.
Chico State shot 61.4 percent (35-of-57) and was 10-of-24 from 3-point range and 15-of-24 from the free-throw line.
Chico State had a 33-24 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 11 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA scored the first four points of the game on a basket by
Raphael Gay and a dunk by Bell and the Golden Eagles led as late as 28-27 following a 3-pointer by
Connor Scales. The Golden Eagles trailed by eight points before a 3-pointer by Escobar made it 51-46 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by Escobar got the Golden Eagles within three points at 59-56 and a 3-pointer by Ringer kept it at 76-70 with seven minutes to play.
A layup by Cofield II got the Golden Eagles to within 82-78 with four minutes to go, Bell's layup kept it at 85-80 with 3:18 to go and a basket by Cofield II made it 87-82 with 2:17 to go.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
