POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team used a tremendous second-half run to pick up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road win at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles outscored the Broncos, 41-30, in the second half of a 67-58 victory on Saturday in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (5-7, 3-3 CCAA) stormed out to a 67-48 lead with four minutes to go and closed out the win.
Jaden Lazo hit three 3-pointers to spark a big stretch early in the second half that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Corey Cofield II had a game-high 20 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Dominic Escobar had 13 points.
Shyheim Parm and Jaden Winfield had 10 points each for Cal Poly Pomona (8-4, 3-3 CCAA).
Shane Bell had nine points, seven rebounds and eight assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Kyjuan Cannady had nine points. Lazo had all nine of his points during the key stretch early in the second half.
Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (22-of-55) and was 8-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 42.3 percent for the game (22-of-52) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 9-of-15 from the free-throw line. Both teams had 34 rebounds, while Cal State LA committed just 14 turnovers to 21 for the Broncos.
Escobar hit a 3-pointer to open the second half and Bell followed with an offensive rebound and basket to make it 31-28 and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. Lazo scored Cal State LA's next nine points to open up a 40-34 advantage and the Golden Eagles led by at least five points the rest of the way.Â
Cal State LA held a 53-46 lead with 10 minutes before going on a 14-2 run that essentially put the game away. Cannady started the run with a basket and
Connor Scales followed with a three-point play to give the Golden Eagles a 58-46 lead. After a Cal Poly Pomona basket, the Golden Eagles scored the next nine points to take a 67-48 lead. Escobar hit a 3-pointer,
Devin Ringer hit a pair of free throws, Cofield made a free throw and then converted a three-point play to give the Golden Eagles their 19-point edge.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday at Sonoma State.
