Golden Eagles Battle To 0-0 Tie With Hawaii-Hilo

LOS ANGELES -- A battle between two women's soccer teams expected to challenge for regular season titles in their respective conferences ended up in a scoreless draw Saturday night at University Stadium.

Cal State LA, a top team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and Hawaii-Hilo, a top team in the PacWest Conference, put on a defensive showcase in a game that featured a lot of end-to-end action but no goals. Cal State LA's Taesja Paopao, the CCAA's Goalkeeper of the Year, had eight saves and Phoebe Barnes, the PacWest's Goalkeeper of the Year, had seven in a game where the defenses were able to prevent many high-quality chances and forced shots to be taken from distance.

Hawaii-Hilo (0-0-1) had a slim 12-11 edge in shots, while Cal State LA (1-0-1) had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles, who scored four goals in a season-opening win over Westmont on Thursday, were unable to duplicate that offensive showing against a stingy Hawaii-Hilo defense on Saturday. The 0-0 finish shouldn't be a huge surprise as Cal State LA allowed only 10 goals in 21 games last season with 12 shutouts in 2023, while Hawaii-Hilo gave up just 13 goals in 15 games.

Paopao recorded her first shutout of 2024 and now has 13 already in her Cal State LA career.

Liliana Gonzalez had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, including a long shot that was tipped just over the crossbar by Barnes in the first and another shot just before the final horn in a crowd that went just wide of the far post.

Shelby Melin and Camila Juarez had a pair of shots. Juarez, in fact, took a dangerous free kick from just outside the box after Delia Bocanegra was fouled in the 77th minute, but her hard shot was blocked.

Mia Del Muro also had a good chance in the second half that went wide.

Cal State LA will return to action with another home game on Wednesday against Vanguard at 7 p.m.
