Golden Eagles Warm Up With Doubleheader Sweep

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team enjoyed a sunny and successful day at Reeder Field on Saturday in a doubleheader against Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles got two beautifully pitched games and swept both California Collegiate Athletic Association contests over the Pioneers, 6-3 and 5-0. Eric Navarrete didn't allow an earned run over 5 1/3 innings in the opener and was backed by a five-out save from Anthony Diaz and Owen Hunt was spectacular with seven shutout innings in the nightcap. Hunt tossed his best game of the season and picked up the second shutout of his Cal State LA career.

Elijah Jackson had triples in his first two at bats of the opener to spark a 10-hit attack, while Matthew Piotrowski and Isaiah Marquez hit back-to-back home runs in the nightcap to stake Hunt to an early lead.

Cal State LA (17-16, 11-12 CCAA) won its third straight game, while Cal State East Bay (15-19, 9-15 CCAA) dropped its fourth straight.

Navarrete got the Golden Eagles to a good start with his best outing of the season. The 5 1/3 innings were a season-best and he allowed only two hits and an unearned run with no walks and five strikeouts.

The game included a rare triple play recorded by the Pioneers in the bottom of the first. Jackson opened the game with a triple and scored on a single by Javy Espinoza. Piotrowski followed with a single and the Golden Eagles had visions of a big first inning. The next play, though, ended the inning.

Cal State East Bay's Danelle Daniels made a diving catch of a line drive by Marquez in right-centerfield. The base umpire hesitated before making an out call and the Golden Eagle base runners were caught off the base paths. Daniels alertly fired to second baseman Niko Mallot for the second out and Mallot then threw to first to complete the triple play.

After the Pioneers scored an unearned run in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1, the Golden Eagles got a double from Kadyn Victorian, a run-scoring triple from Jackson and a run-scoring groundout by Espinoza in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Cal State LA extended the lead to 6-1 in the fifth. Marquez drew a bases-loaded walk and Malik Clayton delivered a two-run single.

After the Pioneers scored two more unearned runs in the eighth to close to within 6-3, Diaz got the final five outs to record his fourth save of the season.

Jackson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Piotrowski and Brayan Nunez had two hits each.

In the nightcap, Hunt was masterful, allowing only three hits while walking three and striking out eight. The win was his fourth of the season and the 17th of his career.

Piotrowski and Marquez hit solo home runs with two outs in the first and Brayan Nunez hit his first home run of the season in a two-run sixth inning for insurance.

Cal State LA will conclude the series with Cal State East Bay with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
