LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had some strong performances in a hard-fought loss to Azusa Pacific on Thursday.
The Golden Eagles were competitive before dropping the doubles point and then fell in the first three singles contests off the court in a 4-0 loss to the Cougars in a match played under "clinching" rules. The match was called when a fourth point was earned at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex, leaving three of the six singles contests unfinished.Â
Cal State LA (2-14) got an impressive showing from
Sarah Olmos, who played brilliantly in doubles with
Hideka Takamura and then was the only Golden Eagle to take a lead in the singles. Olmos and Takamura were tied with Azusa Pacific's Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor, 4-4, at No. 1 doubles when the point was decided.
Courtlyn Lam and
Rochelle Suarez battled with Katherine Nguyen and Shannele Lopez in a 6-3 loss at No. 3 doubles and
Alexandra Hincu and
Sakura Kurokawa fell to Vini Bautista and Julia Jordan at No. 2 doubles, 6-0.
Olmos had the best showing in singles. She had a 6-3, 3-2 lead at No. 2 singles over Bautista when the match was halted.
Lea Rolland was involved in a tight match at No. 5 singles, dropping the first set to Nguyen, 7-5, when the match was called. Hincu's match at No. 3 singles also went unfinished after she dropped the first set, 6-2, and was tied at 1-1 in the second.
In completed matches, Takamura fell to Kane at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, Suarez fell to Tudor at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and
Summer Roybal fell to Lopez at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Cal State LA will return to action next Tuesday, April 9, against Biola at 2 p.m. in the Golden Eagles' final home match of the season.
