Golden Eagles Earn A Big Road Win At Chico State

CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team kept the good times rolling Saturday night with a big road win at Chico State.

Lily Buggs scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Golden Eagles past the Wildcats, 78-66, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (16-10, 13-8 CCAA) won its sixth straight game and completed a regular-season sweep over the second-place Wildcats by winning in Chico for the first time since 2015.

Buggs was simply sensational and had the second-highest scoring game of her career. She poured in a career-high 34 points in a CCAA Tournament semifinal contest with Cal State San Marcos. She played all 40 minutes on Saturday and was 11-of-19 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. She also hit all four of her free-throw attempts and had four rebounds and three steals.

Nicole Flennaugh added 14 points for the Golden Eagles and Donja Payne had 12 points and five rebounds.

Jordan Allred had 19 points for Chico State (19-8, 15-6), while Zhane Duckett had 14 points.

Amaya Fuentes had nine points and six rebounds, while Alicia Jones had six points and Olivia Hodges had six rebounds and two points.

Cal State LA shot 45.2 percent for the game (28-of-62) and was 7-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-24 from the free-throw line, including 6-of-10 in the fourth quarter. Chico State shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) and was 9-of-25 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 40-34 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 19 for the Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles took command of the game in the second and third quarters, when they outscored the Wildcats, 49-30, to erase a 15-11 deficit after one period. The Golden Eagles fell behind, 9-2, but battled back and got to within 13-11 after a late basket by Flennaugh.

The Golden Eagles then had a 26-19 edge in the second period as Buggs had 17 in the quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 37-34 halftime lead. After Allred hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 37-37, the Golden Eagles went on a 16-2 run to open up a 53-39 advantage. A layup by Fuentes put the Golden Eagles ahead and that was followed by another basket by Fuentes, a 3-pointer by Fuentes, a free throw by Jones, a 3-pointer by Gabriella Rones, a layup by Flennaugh and a three-point play by Buggs accounted for the run. A jumper by Flennaugh and a steal and layup by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 60-45 lead entering the final period.

Cal State LA led by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter and maintained double-digit leads for most of it. The Wildcats got to within nine points at 70-61, but Buggs responded with a layup to push the lead back to 11. Chico State got to within eight points, but six free throws in six attempts from Jones, Flennaugh and Hodges put the game away.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.
