LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team played in one of its most intense and competitive games of the season, but came up just short against rival Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.
In front of the largest home crowd of the season, the Golden Eagles fell to the Toros, 61-60. Cal State LA (16-11, 13-9 CCAA) had a six-game winning streak snapped, but remains as the No. 4 seed for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, which begins on Thursday. The Toros (14-14, 11-11 CCAA), the defending CCAA and West Region champions, finished in a tie for sixth, but missed the tournament due to a tiebreaker.
Thursday's Senior Night contest certainly had a playoff atmosphere as the Golden Eagles and Toros battled to the final seconds. An offensive rebound and basket by Asia Jordan with 1.5 seconds left gave the Toros the win, which was secured after the Golden Eagles missed a pair of free throws with one second remaining.
Gabriella Rones had a team-high 16 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Donja Payne had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Jordan had a game-high 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Toros, while Nala Williams had 17 points and five assists.
Nicole Flennaugh had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Alicia Jones had eight points.
Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent for the game (27-of-70) and was 5-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 1-of-8 from the free-throw line, including 0-for-6 in the second half. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 36.9 percent for the game (24-of-65) and was 3-of-13 from 3-point range. The Toros were 10-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 47-43 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 14 for the Golden Eagles.

Nicole Flennaugh in pregame ceremonies, started slowly and trailed by as many as 10 points in the opening period before a free throw by
Olivia Hodges and a steal by Jones and layup by
Nevaeh Asiasi made it 18-11 after one quarter.
The Golden Eagles pulled to within two points, 20-18, after a jumper by Flennaugh, but the Toros extended their lead to nine points before a late basket by
Sofia Fidelus made it 35-28 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles then held the Toros to just four points in the third quarter and grabbed a one-point lead, 40-39, entering the fourth period. The Golden Eagles scored the last eight points of the third quarter on baskets by Payne, Jones, Hodges and Asiasi to take the lead.
Cal State LA got back-to-back 3-pointers from Rones to take a 52-46 lead and another 3-pointer by Rones put the Golden Eagles ahead 57-51 with 1:35 to go. After the Toros pulled to within one, Flennaugh countered with a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 60-56 lead with 43 seconds, but Williams hit a 3-pointer to slice the lead to 60-59, and, after a Cal State LA turnover, Jordan scored the winning points on an offensive rebound.
Cal State LA will now face Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday in a first-round conference tournament game at Cal State San Bernardino.
