SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a six-game winning streak heading into Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos, but not much went right for the Golden Eagles on a disappointing day.
The Golden Eagles committed five errors while dropping the opener, 9-1, and, after taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth in the seven-inning nightcap, the Golden Eagles surrendered single runs in the final two innings to fall, 5-4.
Cal State LA (7-6, 1-2 CCAA) had eight errors in the two games, while Cal State San Marcos (3-5, 2-1 CCAA) didn't commit any.
Matthew Piotrowski continued his torrid start to the season with a pair of two-hit games. He has hit safely in eight straight games with seven multi-hit games during that streak. He is now hitting .471 for the season.
The Golden Eagles' day got off to a rough start as they gave up nine runs despite allowing only three hits. Five errors, five walks and four hit batters contributed to the loss.
Cal State LA had eight hits in the game, but managed only a fourth-inning run.
Cesar Chavez delivered a run-scoring single to drive in Piotrowski. That cut the deficit to 5-1, but the Cougars put the game away with five runs in the eighth inning, aided by three Cal State LA errors.
Dorsey Chatham got the start and allowed two hits and four earned runs in six innings.
Holden Hungerford went the final two innings and gave up just one hit while all four runs he allowed were unearned.
Cal State LA dropped a heartbreaker in the nightcap. After falling behind 3-0 in the third inning, the Golden Eagles struck back for a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by
Ethan Gonzalez and a sacrifice fly by
Elijah Jackson.
The Golden Eagles then took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a two-run double by Jackson, but the Cougars got a game-tying home run in the sixth inning from Luke Reece and a game-winning sacrifice fly by Garrett Teunissen in the seventh.
Owen Hunt allowed five hits and five runs - four earned - in six-plus innings. He walked four and struck out eight.
