ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team took its winning ways on the road and clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament in the process.
The Golden Eagles won their fifth straight game with a hard-fought 74-68 win over Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (15-10, 12-8 CCAA) remains in fourth place alone with two games remaining and guaranteed a spot in the CCAA Tournament for a third straight year. The top six teams will qualify for the tourney and Cal State San Marcos, Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State LA have already wrapped up spots. The other two positions have not yet been filled.
Nicole Flennaugh led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 18 points, while
Lily Buggs had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, her seventh of the season.
Gabriella Rones had 11 points and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Marley Johnson had 18 points to lead four players in double figures for Cal Poly Humboldt (11-13, 9-11 CCAA). Madison Rubino had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the 'Jacks, who had lost only one game at home in conference play before Thursday.
Sofia Fidelus scored nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Olivia Hodges had nine rebounds to go along with three points.
Cal State LA shot 42.1 percent for the game (24-off-57) and was 12-of-30 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-20 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) and was 10-of-17 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were also 10-of-17 from the free-throw line.Â
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 36-30, but committed only eight turnovers to 10 for the 'Jacks.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first six points of the game and fell down by as many as seven points before pulling even after one period thanks to a 3-pointer by Flennaugh.
A pair of free throws by
Donja Payne gave the Golden Eagles the lead early in the second period and a 3-pointer by
Iyanna Lamb gave them a 26-24 lead. Cal Poly Humboldt led by as many as six points in the second period, but a 3-pointer by Flennaugh closed the margin to 40-39 at halftime.
Cal State LA fell behind by five points early in the third quarter, but five straight points by Rones and a basket by
Alicia Jones put the Golden Eagles ahead. A pair of 3-pointers by Flennaugh and one by Rones gave the Golden Eagles a 55-47 lead and a 3-pointer by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 58-50 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Jones hit a big 3-pointer to keep the lead at 67-60 and Flennaugh hit a jumper to push the lead to 70-65 with 1:40 to go. The 'Jacks got to within three points in the final minute, but Lamb hit three free throws to preserve the lead.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Chico State.
