Golden Eagles Shake Things Up With Another Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put an end to a lengthy streak with a big home victory on Saturday and added a little spice to the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings in the process.

The Golden Eagles snapped an 11-game losing streak to Cal State San Marcos with a thrilling 76-73 victory in University Gym and made things awfully interesting with three conference games remaining. The Golden Eagles (14-10, 11-8 CCAA) are now alone in fourth place in the conference after winning their fourth straight game, while the first-place Cougars (18-6, 15-4 CCAA) saw their lead over second-place Chico State trimmed to just one game.

Cal State LA registered its first win over Cal State San Marcos since a 56-52 home victory on Dec. 19, 2017 and bounced back nicely from a 73-43 loss in San Marcos earlier this season.

Lily Buggs led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points and five rebounds, while Alicia Jones had 15 points and four rebounds. Olivia Hodges had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Nicole Flennaugh, the hero of Thursday's win over Sonoma State, had 10 points.

Jordan Vazquez had a big game for Cal State San Marcos, posting a 20-point, 18-rebound double-double.

Nevaeh Asiasi and Iyanna Lamb had six points each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 47.6 percent for the game (30-of-63) and was 7-of-17 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were only 9-of-20 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos shot 42.1 percent for the game (24-of-57) and was 6-of-17 from 3-point range. The Cougars were 19-of-27 from the line.

Cal State LA had a 37-36 rebounding edge and both teams committed 11 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles got off to a blazing start and made 11-of-14 shots in the opening period while jumping out to a 29-23 lead by the end of the quarter.

A 3-pointer by Sofia Fidelus pushed the lead to 32-23 early in the second quarter, but the Cougars closed the gap to one point three times in the period before a layup by Hodges with an assist by Rones made it 41-38 at halftime.

Cal State LA had a strong third quarter as well and took its first double-digit lead after a pair of free throws by Jones gave the Golden Eagles a 56-46 lead. A layup by Asiasi gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 58-47 and a layup by Lamb at the end of the quarter gave the Golden Eagles a 63-55 lead entering the fourth period.

Lamb opened the fourth period with a layup to extend the lead to 65-55 and a free throw by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 72-61 lead with five minutes remaining. A basket by Payne kept the lead at 76-68 with 2:28 to go, but the Golden Eagles then had to fight off a late push by the Cougars to secure the win. Charity Gallegos made a steal and layup to make it 76-70 and a 3-pointer by Truitt Reilly got the Cougars to within three in the final minute.

After a Cal State LA turnover, the Cougars had two 3-point attempts go awry and the Golden Eagles hung on for the win.

Cal State LA will now go on the road for two big games next week, beginning with a contest at Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
