Golden Eagles Complete Strong Week With A Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team wrapped another impressive week with a big win at home against Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles shot 64 percent while racing to a 48-31 halftime lead and went on to an 82-66 win over the Pioneers Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (18-5, 13-4 CCAA) remains one game back of first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills and in a second-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino with five conference games remaining. The Golden Eagles beat sixth-place San Francisco State and fifth-place Cal State East Bay (14-9, 10-7 CCAA) in home games this week.

Eche Okeke had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Corey Cofield also had 19 points with two rebounds and two assists. Kris Krause had 13 points and five rebounds and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and Deuce Walker had 11 points in four assists.

Tyree Campbell led four Pioneers in double figures with 14 points and four rebounds, while Grady Lewis, Daeshawn Eaton and Ramsey Huff had 10 points each.

Isaiah Fields had seven points for the Golden Eagles, while Jaden Lazo had six points and three rebounds and A'Jahni Levias had five points, five assists and three rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 56.6 percent for the game (30-of-53) and was 8-of-15 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) and was 8-of-19 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 30-27, but committed only 12 turnovers to 18 for the Pioneers.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 18-17, before 3-pointers by Fields and Walker gave them a 23-18 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Walker and Krause, layups by Levias and Dominic Escobar and baskets by Fields, Okeke and Krause fueled a 10-2 run that pushed the lead to 39-22. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 19 points before settling for a 48-31 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins for the entire second half. The Pioneers closed to within 11 points, 64-53, with 9:39 to go, but the Golden Eagles responded with a strong push that resulted in a 14-4 run and a 78-57 lead with 4:27 to go.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Sonoma State.
