TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team endured a few anxious moments before securing a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles saw a 19-point second-half lead trimmed to just three points, but got a late stop and two free throws to finally put away an important 88-83 win over Stanislaus State in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (15-5, 11-4 CCAA) snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the 10th time in its last 13 games.
Shane Bell led six Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points and five rebounds, while
Dominic Escobar added 13 points.
John Wade III led Stanislaus State (6-14, 3-11 CCAA) with a game-high 23 points.
Eche Okeke had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
A'Jahni Levias and
Isaiah Fields had 12 points each.
Corey Cofield had 11 points and five rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 50 percent for the game (35-of-70) and was 11-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) and was 10-of-32 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 17-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA did a great job on the boards and had a 40-30 rebounding advantage. The Golden Eagles committed 14 turnovers to 13 for the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles had a terrific start and opened up an 18-point halftime lead, 44-26. The Golden Eagles put together a 13-0 run to extend a 7-6 edge to 20-6. A 3-pointer by Escobar started the run, Bell hit a jumper, Levias and Bell hit 3-pointers and Bell hit another jumper for the 14-point lead. Three-pointers by
Deuce Walker and Bell helped the Golden Eagles open up their biggest lead of the half, 44-24, and they settled for the 44-26 halftime edge.
A 3-pointer by Fields gave the Golden Eagles a 67-46 lead and a layup by Levias kept the margin at 21, 69-48, with 10:47 remaining. A three-point play by Okeke gave the Golden Eagles a 78-59 lead with seven minutes remaining and the Golden Eagles seemed to be in complete control. A pair of free throws by Cofield made it 80-61 with 6:42 left.
Stanislaus State, though, responded with a swift 18-2 run to stunningly pull within 82-79 with 2:26 to go.Â
Cofield made a layup to stop the run and a layup by Okeke made it 86-81 with 1:21 left. Stanislaus State again pushed back and pulled to within 86-83 and had a chance to tie, but the Golden Eagles' defense came through, forcing a late 3-point attempt and Cofield grabbed the rebound to essentially end it. He was fouled and hit both free throws to finish the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
