LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball completed a weekend sweep with a victory Saturday afternoon over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 20-9 lead after one period and went on to a 76-45 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the Otters in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-1, 2-1 CCAA) led 34-22 at halftime and outscored Cal State Monterey Bay (1-6, 0-3 CCAA) 20-9 in the third period to break the game open.
Lily Buggs had 13 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Nevaeh Asiasi had 12 points, while
Sofia Fidelus had 10 points.
A'ajah Slocum had a game-high 18 points for the Otters, while Ella Doherty had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Cal State LA's
Olivia Hodges reached double figures in rebounding once again with 11 on Saturday to go along with seven points.
Ronyae Jackson had nine points and five rebounds, while
Gabriella Rones and
Amaya Fuentes had eight points each.
Cal State LA shot 47.7 percent for the game (31-of-65) and was 7-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot just 28.8 percent (15-of-52) and was 2-of-17 from 3-point range. The Otters were 13-of-22 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 41-29 rebounding edge and committed only nine turnovers to 13 for the Otters.
Cal State LA scored the first six points of the game, all on layups by Asiasi, and never trailed on Saturday. Doherty got the Otters on the board with a 3-pointer, but the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 run and opened up a 16-5 lead after a jumper by Buggs.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by
Mary Cotton and Rones pushed the lead to 26-10 early in the second period and a 3-pointer by Fidelus made it 29-12. A 3-pointer by Fidelus and a layup by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first half at 34-14, but the Otters closed the half with an 8-0 run to make it 34-22 at halftime.
The Otters got as close as 10 points in the third quarter, 36-26, but the Golden Eagles closed the period with an 18-3 run to take a 54-29 lead into the final period.Â
Cal State LA led by as many as 35 points in the fourth period.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 19, with a non-conference game against Central Washington in University Gym at 5:30 p.m.
