LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in an impressive performance Thursday night to pick up a hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles had five players score in double figures and used an efficient offense to subdue the Warriors, 75-63, in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-4, 1-1 CCAA) held a slim two-point lead at halftime and outscored Stanislaus State (4-4, 1-1 CCAA), 42-32, in the second half.
Corey Cofield II had a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Shane Bell had 13 points and five assists.
Dominic Escobar had 11 points and eight rebounds as well.
Jeremiah Jones and Jonathan Tchengang scored 13 points each to lead the Warriors, while Jason Zimmer had 10 points.
Jaden Lazo and
Devin Ringer each had 11 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Connor Scales had six points on a pair of 3-pointers.
Cal State LA shot 53.1 percent for the game (26-of-49) and was 12-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 58.3 percent in the second half (14-of-24). Cal State LA was 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60) and was 6-of-22 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 11-of-22 from the free-throw line.
Stanislaus State had a 36-28 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 12 for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, 20-10, before a 3-pointer by Scales kind of stemmed the tide. They still trailed by nine points, 27-18, before closing the half on a 15-4 run that included a go-ahead 3-pointer by Cofield II that gave the Golden Eagles a 33-31 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by Scales gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead, 47-37, and a 3-pointer by Cofield II pushed the lead to 50-38. A pair of free throws by Ringer gave the Golden Eagles a 16-point lead, 64-48, with eight minutes to go and Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay at 3 p.m.Â
