LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team prevailed in a defensive battle against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.
The Golden Eagles limited the Otters to just 26 percent shooting and pulled away for a 64-45 win in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-4, 2-1 CCAA) led by only five points at halftime, 25-20, but outscored the Otters, 39-25, for the win.
Raphael Gay had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Corey Cofield II had 17 points and six rebounds. Gay had season highs in both points and rebounds in his best game so far as a Golden Eagle and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor.
Michael Mora had 11 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (2-5, 0-3 CCAA).
Shane Bell and
Kyjuan Cannady had eight points each for the Golden Eagles.Â
Both teams struggled from the perimeter, connecting on only 4-of-34 attempts combined from 3-point range.
Cal State LA shot 41.8 percent for the game (23-of-55) and was just 1-of-13 from 3-point range. Cal State Monterey Bay shot just 26.1 percent (12-of-46) and was just 3-of-21 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles were 17-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Otters were 18-of-25.
Cal State LA had a 36-35 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 24 for the Otters.
The game was tied only once at 2-2 and the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never trailed. Cal State LA's biggest lead of the first half was eight, the final time at 25-17 after a layup by
Devin Ringer before a 3-pointer by Michael Mora made it 25-20 at halftime.
The Otters got as close as five points, 27-22, early in the second half and still trailed by only eight, 38-30, with 11 minutes to play.Â
Ringer hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 41-30 lead and a three-point play by
Connor Scales followed by a jumper by
Shane Bell extended the lead to 46-32 with 9:47 to go. A three-point play by Gay put the Golden Eagles ahead by 20 points, 55-35, with six minutes to play. A three-point play by
Martin Zarzuela accounted for the final points of the game.
Cal State LA will return to action with a non-conference game against Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m.
