LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team completed play in the CCAA/PacWest Crossover Tournament with a tough loss at Biola.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start and Biola raced out to a double-digit halftime lead and went on to an 83-71 victory in Chase Gym. Cal State LA (0-2), which was coming off a 74-72 loss to Concordia on Friday, dropped both games in the multi-site tournament. Biola (2-0) won both its games, also beating Cal State San Marcos on Friday in San Marcos.
Jaden Lazo led the Golden Eagles with 18 points and four rebounds, while
Corey Cofield II had another strong game with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Kyjuan Cannady also had a strong game with 14 points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists.
Casey Cappo had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead four Eagles in double figures.
Dominic Escobar had eight points, three rebounds and three blocks for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 41.8 percent for the game (28-of-67) and was 9-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also just 6-of-13 from the free-throw line. Biola shot 50.8 percent for the game (31-of-61) and shot 60.7 percent in the first half while jumping out to a 46-33 halftime lead. The Eagles were 13-of-27 from 3-point range. Biola was 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Biola had a 40-34 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 13 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA fell into an early 20-5 hole and never could overcome the early deficit. The Golden Eagles got a steal and basket from Lazo to cut the margin to 26-18 and an offensive rebound and basket by Cofield II made it a 35-27 deficit before Biola closed the half with four consecutive free throws to take a 46-33 halftime lead.
Biola extended its lead to 62-40 with 14 minutes remaining, but the Golden Eagles made a late surge and got a 3-pointer by Cannady and a jumper by
Shane Bell to make it 80-71.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Fresno Pacific on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
