POMONA -- History repeated itself on Saturday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title match for Cal State LA's women's volleyball team and now the Golden Eagles are hoping that happens again in the weeks ahead.
The Golden Eagles fell in the tournament championship match in four sets for the second straight year, this time to No. 3 seed Stanislaus State as the Warriors won their first-ever tourney crown, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-17 in Kellogg Arena. Stanislaus State (22-7) locks up the CCAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
For the Golden Eagles, they are now hoping that they can put together the same kind of run they did last year after falling to Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA Tournament in University Gym. Cal State LA (18-10) used that loss as motivation and proceeded to win a second straight West Region and first-ever national title by winning its final six matches.
The main architect of that run, senior
Emily Elliott, added another 20 kills to her expanding CCAA career kills total that now stands at 1,986. She completed a tremendous tournament with 79 kills in 13 sets over three matches and an unthinkable 91.5 points.
Not surprisingly, she earned All-Tournament honors for the second straight season and was joined on the team by teammates
Havannah Vogel,
Zuhal Cetin and
Jameson Sanders.
Stanislaus State's Ellison Weaver was the tourney Most Valauble Player and was joined by her teammates Isabella Saucedo, Alex Byrd, Gabby Rawson and Haley Burdo. San Francisco State's Izzy Issak, Cal State San Bernardino's Savannah Hoffmann and Cal Poly Pomona's Helen McMullin were also named to the 12-player team.
Elliott had a match-high 20 kills and 22.5 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Samarah DaCoud had 13 kills and 11 digs.
Haley Roundtree had six kills and a solo block.
Weaver had 18 kills and 16 digs to lead the Warriors, while Mariah Iosua had 12 kills.
Jameson Sanders had a team-high 16 digs, while
Zuhal Cetin had seven kills and seven digs.
Ashlyn Beaver and
Arielle Chandler had 16 set assists and an ace.
Cal State LA had a 30-23 edge in kills over the first two sets, but managed only 19 over the final two. Stanislaus State ended up with a 53-49 advantage in kills and hit at a .228 percentage to .176 for the Golden Eagles. Stanislaus State also ended up with a 10-6 advantage in blocks.
Cal State LA had only five aces and 10 service errors, while Stanislaus State wound up with eight aces and 13 errors.
The Golden Eagles started well and opened up a 17-9 lead following a four-point run featuring a pair of aces from
Brooke Paige and kills by Cetin and Vogel. Stanislaus State tightened things up and closed to within 22-20 after a 4-0 run and 23-21. A kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a service error by the Warriors ended the set.
Cal State LA also had its chances to take the second set, but couldn't hold a 21-17 lead. Kills by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to their last leads at 22-21 and 23-22. Another kill by Elliott evened the set at 24-24, but the Warriors got the next two points and won the set on an ace by Gabby Rawson.
Cal State LA also had chances in the third set, leading as late as 22-21 on a kill by Elliott before the Warriors got to set point with a 3-0 run. A service error kept the Golden Eagles alive at 24-23, but a kill by Iosua ended the set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 15-5 in the fourth set and never could recover. A pair of kills by DaCoud and a kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to within 20-14, but that's as close as they would get. A kill by Weaver ultimately ended the match for the Warriors.
Cal State LA will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field in a selection show on Monday on ncaa.com.
