Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles' Tourney Streak Comes To An End

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team saw its remarkable three-year California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title reign come to a disappointing end Friday in a semifinal match against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the first seven minutes of the game and the Toros made it stand up for a 1-0 victory at Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Stadium. No. 4 seed Cal State LA (11-2-6) had some strong chances in the last 20 minutes to get the equalizer, but No. 1 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-4-5) was able to survive and beat the Golden Eagles for the second time in eight days.

Cal State LA had a pair of amazing streaks snapped with the result. The Golden Eagles had reached the conference tournament championship game six times in a row and had won the title five times in those six seasons, including the last three in a row. The last time the Golden Eagles were knocked out in the semifinals came in 2016 when they were eliminated by Sonoma State, 2-0.

Since then, Cal State LA was 11-0-3 in the tournament before Friday's loss snapped a 14-match unbeaten streak.

Two incredible streaks do remain, however. Thanks to a 3-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in a first-round match, Cal State LA has posted at least one win in eight straight conference tournaments and the Golden Eagles have reached the semifinals in every year of the tournament since it took its current six-team format in 2014 and 13 straight times overall dating back to 2010.

Cal State LA had a 17-12 advantage in shots on Friday, including a big 12-6 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles were particularly dangerous in the last 20 or so minutes of the game, but had nothing to show for it. Cal State LA had eight shots and five corner kicks in the final 14 minutes, but got only one attempt on frame, a bid by Rene Cortez in the 89th minute from in tight that was stopped by Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Arturo Magana.

The only goal of the game came in the seventh minute when Cal State Dominguez Hills was able to keep in an attempted clearing attempt and Jose Peredia got behind the defense to collect a pass from Ramiro Rosas for his fourth goal of the season.

Cortez had five shots for the Golden Eagles, while Tommaso Belli had four and Oscar Warne had three.

Diego Bravo had one save in goal for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA, which was ranked No. 1 in the Super Region 4 poll released on Wednesday, will now await the NCAA Selection Show, which will be on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on ncaa.com. The Golden Eagles are seeking their 18th NCAA appearance and their 12th in the last 13 years.
