LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team was at home for the second round of the NCAA Tournament for a fifth straight season on Sunday and the Golden Eagles took full advantage.
The Golden Eagles scored late in the first half, early in the second half and went on to a 4-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in University Stadium. Cal State LA (12-2-6) has reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five years under the Super Region 4 format and will be looking to advance to the Super Region 4 championship match for the fourth time.
Cal State LA, the No. 5 seed, will face No. 1 seed Colorado State Pueblo next Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. PST in Colorado in a rematch of last season's Super Region 4 championship taken by the Thunderwolves on penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw.
It was a sweet victory for the Golden Eagles, who suffered a pair of tough losses to the Toros in the past two-plus weeks. First, the Toros beat Cal State LA, 3-0, in Carson to knock the Golden Eagles out of a share of the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead on Nov. 7 and then eliminated the Golden Eagles from the CCAA Tournament last Friday, 1-0, at Cal State East Bay.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-5-6) went on to share the conference title and win the conference tournament crown, both honors that went to Cal State LA in 2023.
On Sunday, though, after weathering a strong opening half from the Toros, it was the Golden Eagles' day to shine.
Cal State LA picked up its first-ever NCAA Tournament win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first NCAA meeting between the two programs since 2017. The Golden Eagles were 0-3 against the Toros until Sunday.
Ignacio Moreno opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a beautiful goal after a brilliant through ball from
Erick Alamo. That goal seemed to energize the Golden Eagles, who were outshot in the first half, 7-2, with goalkeeper
Diego Bravo making all three of his saves in the first half. The goal was the first of the season for Moreno.
Cal State LA opened the second half with great promise and took a 2-0 lead on a spectacular goal from
Emil Kischka in the 51st minute. He split the Toro defense with a fierce run down the middle and fired a shot from outside the box that glanced off the right post and in for his third goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles then put the game out of reach after CCAA Player of the Year Mikey McKibbin was sent off for his second caution of the game in the 61st minute.
Cal State LA extended its lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute on a goal by
Oscar Warne. The play started on a long boot by Bravo that was flicked on by
Rene Cortez to Warne, who converted for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Jacob Solek then notched the first goal of his Cal State LA career in the 82nd minute with an assist from Alamo, his second of the game, to make it 4-0.
Cal State Dominguez Hills broke the shutout bid with a goal by Jose Peredia in the 88th minute with an assist from Kenny Lee. Peredia was rewarded for a strong game that saw him take a match-high seven shots.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 12-10 advantage in shots, although the Golden Eagles had an 8-5 edge in the second half. Cal State LA had the only two corner kicks of the game.
