Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 2 Golden Eagles Earn Tie With No. 13 Wildcats

CHICO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Chico State Friday in a battle off nationally-ranked powers.

The No. 2 Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from Erick Alamo and tied the No. 13 Wildcats in Chico State's University Soccer Stadium. Cal State LA (5-0-2, 0-0-1 CCAA) extended its unbeaten streak to 21 straight games dating back to last season and battled to a draw in a conference match for the first time since a 2-2 draw with Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 9, 2022.

The Golden Eagles also drew with Chico State (6-1-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) in Chico for the second straight meeting. That game was also a 1-1 tie on Oct. 2, 2022.

Cal State LA scored on its only shot on goal when Alamo scored his first career goal in the 44th minute with an assist from Roei Mordechay. Alamo, who played in six games for the Golden Eagles in 2022 and was a redshirt last season, is having his best season with the program. He has already appeared in five games for the Golden Eagles this season and made his first shot on goal a big one.

Mordechay, meanwhile, picked up his second assist in the last three games. He now has four assists in his Cal State LA career.

The Golden Eagles took the lead into halftime, but the Wildcats equalized early in the second half when Sylus Sells scored his first goal of the season just 5:01 into the period. It was just the second goal allowed by Cal Staet LA this season and the first surrendered in the second half.

Diego Bravo made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.

Chico State had a 14-7 advantage in shots with seven shots taken in each half. Cal State LA had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Andrew Portis and Rene Cortez led the defensive effort with each playing all 90 minutes in the game. Emil Kischka had a team-high two shots.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a game at Stanislaus State at 11:30 p.m.
