CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team found itself in another lengthy battle Saturday, this time at travel partner Cal State Dominguez Hills, and prevailed in yet another five-set thriller.
The Golden Eagles missed an opportunity to close out the match in four sets, but took care of matters in the fifth, outlasting the Toros, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18, 26-28, 15-6. No. 20 Cal State LA (12-5, 7-3 CCAA), the defending national champion, improved to 7-2 in five-set matches this season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-12, 3-7 CCAA), which pushed the Golden Eagles to 32-30 in the final set of Friday's match in University Stadium, extended the match to five sets after fighting off a match point in the fourth set on Saturday. The Golden Eagles fought off two set points before the Toros captured the set.
Cal State LA, though, took command quickly in the fifth set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead and never looking back.
Emily Elliott had a match-high 31 kills and continued her season-long brilliance. She entered the weekend second in the nation in kills per set and No. 1 in points per set. She reached 30 kills or more for the third time this season and also led the Golden Eagles on Saturday with six blocks and had a service ace to reach 36 points in the match, just one off her season high of 37.
Ashlyn Beaver had eight kills and 19 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Jameson Sanders had a match-high 24 digs.
Ava Hurry led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 11 kills, while Fallon Freeman had 10 kills.
Katerina Korre had six kills, two aces and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Arielle Chandler had 24 set assists, 11 digs and one ace.
Cal State LA started slowly and dropped the opening set, but the Golden Eagles found their stride after facing a 15-12 deficit in the second frame. nd took the second and third sets by comfortable margins. Back-to-back kills by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles an 18-16 lead and won five straight points on
Rebecca Topete's service to get to set point at 24-17. An Elliott kill ended the set.
Cal State LA held a slim 17-16 lead in the third set, but a kill by Elliott, a block by
Samarah DaCoud and
Rachel Lowe and a kill by Elliott stretched the lead to 20-16. Cal State LA scored the final four points of the set, the last three behind DaCoud's serve and took a 2-1 lead after a kill from Korre.
Cal State LA seemed poised to end the match after taking a 23-20 lead in the fourth on a kill by Lowe. The Toros, though, evened the match at 23-23 before a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a set point. The Toros, though, scored the next two points to gain the advantage and ultimately won the set after a kill by Hurry and an ace by Ashlyn Riddle.
The Golden Eagles, though, were undeterred and quickly took control of the fifth set. Korre had an effective serving run, including an ace, to help Cal State LA take a 10-3 lead. The Toros got as close as 11-6, but a kill by Beaver, a bad set, and two straight attack errors ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road match at Cal State San Bernardino.
