SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team came up big down the stretch in the final two sets to secure a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State San Bernardino.
In a battle between the two 2023 conference co-champions, the Golden Eagles prevailed, 25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 25-20 on Kim Cherniss Court in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (13-5, 8-3 CCAA) pulled to within one game of second-place San Francisco State with the win.
Although the defending national champions had beaten the Coyotes in the last two NCAA playoff meetings in Coussoulis Arena, including a memorable victory in the NCAA West Regional championship match last season, Thursday's win was the first regular-season victory for the Golden Eagles in San Bernardino since 2012.
Emily Elliott, the reigning American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week, had another outstanding match, leading the way with 26 kills, five aces, two blocks and 33 points in the four sets. She averaged 8.25 points per set in the match.
Haley Roundtree also had a big performance, matching a season high with 12 kills and hitting at a .476 percentage.
Samarah DaCoud had seven kills and a team-high 16 digs.
Ashley Robinson had 15 kills to lead Cal State San Bernardino (10-8, 6-5 CCAA).
Katerina Korre had six kills, two aces and two solo blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Arielle Chandler had 26 set assists and
Ashlyn Beaver had 19 set assists and a pair of kills.
Cal State LA had a 55-45 edge in kills and outhit the Coyotes, .213-.113. Cal State LA had a 12-11 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles had eight service aces and seven errors, while the Coyotes had 11 aces and nine errors.
The Golden Eagles got a three-point run on a solo block by Elliott and two kills from Elliott to open up a 22-18 lead in the first set. After the Coyotes got to within 22-21, an attack error, and kills from Elliott and Korre gave the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State LA had an opportunity to go up, 2-0, and held two second points at 24-22 after a kill by Elliott. The Coyotes, though, got a kill by M'Kera Drake and an ace by Abbey Clark to even it at 24-24. A kill by Elliott tied the set at 25-25, but the Coyotes got a kill by Robinson and an ace by Kylie Thomas to even the match.
The third set was tied at 20-20 before the Golden Eagles rolled off the final five points of the frame on a kill by Roundtree, a block by Roundtree and Beaver, a kill by DaCoud, an ace by Korre and a kill by DaCoud to take a 25-20 decision.
Cal State LA then jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the fourth set before finding themselves in a real battle after the Coyotes rallied impressively and took a 20-19 lead after a block by Drake and Jaiden Van Horn. The Golden Eagles, though, bounced back to win the final six points. Roundtree started the run with a kill, an attack error was followed by two kills by Elliott, an ace by Korre got the Golden Eagles to match point and an attack error ended it.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at San Francisco State at 1 p.m.
