LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to 25 matches in a row after an exciting and hard-fought draw with Cal Poly Pomona in a battle of nationally-ranked teams Thursday night.
The No. 2 Golden Eagles (8-0-3, 3-0-2 CCAA) got a game-tying goal in the 78th minute from
Carson Nguyen and earned a 1-1 draw with the No. 17 Broncos (8-1-3, 3-0-2 CCAA) in University Stadium. The two rivals left the match the same way they entered it - tied for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocition.
The Golden Eagles and Broncos both have 11 points, one ahead of third-place Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles might have been forgiven for thinking it just wasn't there night for the first 50 or so minutes of the match. Cal Poly Pomona took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a penalty kick goal by Max Laguna and the Golden Eagles had an apparent equalizer in the 48th minute wiped away due to offsides after a lengthy discussion among the officials before a final ruling.
Cal State LA, though, was undeterred and played a desperate and effective second half for the second straight match. The Golden Eagles' effort finally paid off with a beautiful goal from
Carson Nguyen in the 78th minute.
Oscar Warne made a strong move to elude a defender and sent in a left-footed cross that Nguyen headed brilliantly into the net for his first goal of the season. It was the third goal of his career.
Warne picked up his first assist of the season and the seventh of his Cal State LA career.
The match was a physical one and the action really picked up in an intense second half. Thirteen of the game's 21 fouls were committed in the second half with Cal Poly Pomona committing nine in the second half and 15 for the game.
Cal State LA held a narrow 8-7 advantage in shots and both teams had five corner kicks.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Diego Bravo made three saves for the Golden Eagles, while Luke Garciduenas had two saves for the Broncos.
Julian Martinez and
Emil Kischka each had two shots for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday.
